AFCON 2025 – Morocco to make statement against Comoros

AFCON 2025 begins under the lights in Rabat on Sunday as hosts Morocco face Comoros in the Group A opener at the rebuilt Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

History favours the hosts, there have been 19 host-nation wins in opening matches at the Africa Cup of Nations, and Morocco will be desperate to make it 20.

Betway price Morocco at 1.15, with Comoros out at 20.00 and the draw 7.00. Those odds reflect the gulf in reputation and ranking, but AFCON has a habit of punishing complacency, especially when expectation sits heavily on one side.

Context and form

Morocco arrive as Africa’s top-ranked side and one of the strongest teams globally, unbeaten in competitive matches since their shock round-of-16 exit at AFCON 2023. That loss to South Africa reinforced an uncomfortable truth, despite their World Cup pedigree, Morocco have often underperformed at this tournament. They are chasing only their second AFCON title, and their first since 1976.

The form is emphatic. Six straight wins across competitions underline their control and consistency. Even with Achraf Hakimi, Sofyan Amrabat and Hamza Igmane unlikely to feature, the Atlas Lions still boast depth across the pitch.

Comoros’ form line is more uneven, but their trajectory matters. They topped their AFCON qualifying group unbeaten, finishing above Tunisia, and have shown in recent years that they are capable of upsetting heavyweights. Their debut AFCON in 2021 ended with a famous last-16 appearance at Ghana’s expense, and they have since claimed high-profile results in World Cup qualifying, including a win over Ghana.

Team news

Morocco’s attacking focal point remains Youssef En-Nesyri, the squad’s leading scorer, supported by creativity from Real Madrid’s Brahim Díaz and width from Abde Ezzalzouli. The hosts should dominate territory and possession, even without Hakimi’s overlapping threat.

Comoros arrive with a fully fit squad and will likely lean into compact shape and counter-attacking moments. Youssouf M’Changama and Rafiki Said are central to that threat, while their recent results suggest a team comfortable absorbing pressure.

Where the value lies

At 1.15, Morocco’s outright win is accurate but offers little standalone value. The market expects control rather than chaos. BTTS “No” at 1.39 and Under 3.5 goals at 1.47 reflect Morocco’s defensive solidity and Comoros’ likely low-volume approach.

If you’re looking to stretch the price, the winning margin market is more revealing. Morocco by 3+ at 2.25 aligns with their quality gap and tournament intent, while still accounting for a disciplined Comoros resistance.

Prediction

Comoros are no longer naïve underdogs, but Morocco’s depth, organisation and home advantage should tell. The hosts are well placed to start AFCON 2025 with a controlled, professional win rather than a shootout.
