History of the T20 World Cup

As the cricket world turns its attention to the 2026 edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the shortest format’s global showpiece stands on the brink of its 10th tournament, almost two decades after it first reshaped the game.

Where it all started

The tournament was born in 2007, at a time when T20 cricket was still viewed with scepticism by traditionalists. Initially introduced in English county cricket in 2003 as a tool to attract new audiences, the format’s explosive appeal quickly became impossible to ignore.

Recognising its commercial and sporting potential, the ICC launched a global T20 event in South Africa, featuring 12 teams.

India emerged as the inaugural champions, defeating Pakistan in a dramatic final defined by bowl-outs, bold innovation and lasting imagery. That tournament changed cricket’s trajectory overnight. C

Chris Gayle’s 117 against South Africa, the first T20 international century, and Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes in an over announced the arrival of a format built for moments.

How to bet on cricket

Champions and dominance

Six nations have lifted the trophy since 2007. India, England and the West Indies remain the most successful teams, each claiming two titles. The West Indies are unique in winning both the men’s and women’s trophies in the same year, achieving that feat in 2016.

England and India also hold the distinction of reaching the most finals, underlining their consistency across changing conditions, squads and eras.

Australia joined the winners’ circle in 2021, while Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan have all left lasting tournament imprints despite falling short in finals.

Individual excellence

Virat Kohli sits atop the all-time run-scoring list in T20 World Cup history, combining longevity with an unmatched ability to deliver on the biggest stages. Kohli was also the leading run-scorer at the 2024 edition, anchoring India’s title-winning campaign with a decisive 76 in the final.

On the bowling front, Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga remains the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, his unique action and death-over mastery proving decisive across multiple editions.

In 2024, Afghanistan leg-spinner Fazalhaq Farooqi finished as the tournament’s top wicket-taker, reflecting the growing influence of associate and emerging nations.

Player of the Tournament

No player has won more Player of the Tournament awards than Shahid Afridi, whose all-round brilliance defined Pakistan’s 2009 triumph.

More recently, England’s Sam Curran claimed the award in 2022, while Jasprit Bumrah’s decisive spell in the 2024 final underpinned India’s success, even as the honours reflected a team-driven campaign.

What happened in 2024

India enter 2026 as defending champions after their narrow victory over South Africa in the 2024 final. That match also marked the end of an era, with Kohli and Rohit Sharma retiring from international T20 cricket shortly afterwards.

The tournament’s expansion to 20 teams in 2024 further accelerated its global reach, with the USA, Canada and Uganda making memorable debuts.

Betting outlook

The 2026 edition, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, is expected to favour adaptable squads with depth in spin bowling and power-play batting. Historical trends suggest that teams with experienced middle orders and flexible bowling attacks outperform pre-tournament favourites.

With shorter margins and expanded participation, value is increasingly found in match-ups, top-player markets and in-play betting rather than outright winners.

In a format built on fine margins, history suggests this year’s tournament will again belong to those best prepared to embrace chaos.
