England v Wales – Six Nations betting preview

England open their Six Nations campaign at Twickenham with confidence high and momentum firmly on their side. Wales, by contrast, arrive in London still searching for stability, belief and results — and the gap between the two sides has rarely looked wider heading into this fixture.

An 11-match winning run has put England in a position of rare certainty. Autumn victories over elite opposition, including the All Blacks, have reinforced the sense that this is a side ready to mount a serious championship challenge. Wales, meanwhile, have not beaten a Tier One nation since the 2023 Rugby World Cup and are winless in their last 11 Six Nations matches.

This feels less like a traditional arm-wrestle and more like a test of how ruthlessly England can impose themselves.

The teams

England (1–15)

Recent head-to-head (last five meetings)

  • 15 Mar 2025: Wales 14–68 England (Six Nations, Cardiff)

  • 10 Feb 2024: England 16–14 Wales (Six Nations, Twickenham)

  • 12 Aug 2023: England 19–17 Wales (RWC warm-up, Twickenham)

  • 5 Aug 2023: Wales 20–9 England (RWC warm-up, Cardiff)

  • 25 Feb 2023: Wales 10–20 England (Six Nations, Cardiff)

Despite Wales winning three of those five, the context has shifted dramatically. England are stronger, deeper and more coherent than at any point in that cycle, while Wales are missing leadership figures — notably Jac Morgan — and are fielding a youthful, lightweight midfield.

How the game shapes up

England’s selection tells its own story. The back row of Earl, Underhill and Pepper is built for speed, breakdown dominance and relentless defensive pressure, while Ford’s presence at 10 signals a clear intent to play in the right areas and squeeze Wales early.

Even if conditions are wet, England are well equipped. Their aerial game, physical edge and ability to generate penalties and maul pressure mean they don’t need expansive rugby to build a commanding lead.

Wales, lacking grunt outside of the 6’4 Eddie James, are likely to move the ball and change point of attack, hoping to exploit any over-commitment from England’s line-speed. Their attack did show flashes in the Autumn, and Rees-Zammit’s shift to full-back should give him more space than he would see on the wing.

Discipline could play a role early. England were heavily penalised in their last outing under this referee, and a whistle-happy opening quarter could keep Wales on the scoreboard briefly.

But depth tells over time — and England’s bench, featuring Itoje, Curry and Smith, is designed to accelerate the game once resistance fades.

Betting prediction

Main pick: England -26.5 @1.75
This shapes as a one-sided contest. England’s power, confidence and depth should see them pull clear well before the final quarter.

Other strong angles:

  • England to score 40+ points

  • Wales over 12.5 team points as a consolation angle

  • Louis Rees-Zammit anytime try-scorer with Wales likely to strike from broken play

  • Wales penalty first scoring play if England concede early penalties

  • Marcus Smith last try-scorer — a classic late-game finisher against tiring defenders

Projected score: England by 30–35.
