Pirates aim to halt Sundowns’ PSL dominance

All eyes turn to Loftus Versfeld for this weekend’s marquee clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, with the title race hanging in the balance.

Sundowns lead the Premiership and arrive in Pretoria in solid form, winning six, drawing three, and losing just once in their opening ten matches. Their home record is especially strong.

Pirates, meanwhile, exited the CAF Champions League and are eager to bounce back domestically. They are three points behind Sundowns but importantly have two games in hand, meaning a win this weekend could see them leapfrog the champions.

Betway list Sundowns at 2.12, while the draw is valued at 3.00 and Pirates are priced around 3.75. Betting interest is strong and the attacking depth of both sides suggests the BTTS market, with yes having odds of 2.16 and no at 1.62, could hold solid value.

The rivalry between these clubs runs deep. Sundowns have dominated the league era, securing an eighth consecutive title in May 2025 and reaching the 2025 CAF Champions League final, reinforcing their elite standing in South African football.

Pirates, however, have shown knockout resilience. They beat Sundowns on penalties to win the 2023 MTN8 final and followed that by clinching the 2024 Nedbank Cup with a 2–1 win over the same opponent.

Historically, the rivalry has produced memorable moments. In 2017, Sundowns hammered Pirates 6–0 at Loftus, marking one of the fixture’s most emphatic results. On the player front, stars like Teko Modise (Pirates then Sundowns), Oupa Manyisa and Andile Jali (both Pirates then Sundowns) added narrative to each clash.

From a betting perspective, Sundowns’ reliability and home dominance justify their favouritism. But Pirates’ ability to raise their game in big matches means a straight bet on Sundowns carries risk. A safer angle might be Sundowns Draw No Bet or adding a BTTS selection given both squads’ attacking emphasis.

If you believe Pirates’ momentum and games-in-hand tilt the current balance, the ~3.75 price for an away win could appeal, though choice beats price for value here.
