Gameweek 8 delivered chaos. Manchester United ended a decade-long wait at Anfield, Aston Villa stunned Spurs, and newcomers Sunderland deepened Wolves’ early-season crisis.
Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead, and the visitors repeatedly threatened to extend the lead, with Bruno Fernandes striking the post and slicing through Liverpool’s back line. Cody Gakpo hit the post twice before finally levelling after the break, but Harry Maguire rose late to head the winner and quieten the Kop.

In north London, Aston Villa overturned Tottenham’s bright start to win 2–1. Rodrigo Bentancur’s opener had Spurs in control, yet Villa adjusted and punished defensive lapses. Morgan Rogers equalised with a composed finish before half-time, and Emi Buendia settled it after the interval, guiding Unai Emery’s side to a statement away result and handing Spurs their first home setback of the campaign.
At the Stadium of Light, newly promoted Sunderland underlined their intent to stay up with a 2–0 win over Wolves. Nordi Mukiele struck in the first quarter to set the tone, and relentless late pressure forced an own goal from Ladislav Krejčí in the 92nd minute. The win cements Sunderland’s steady start, Wolves, still without a victory after eight matches and stranded on two points from a possible 24, face a mounting survival fight.
Gameweek 8 belonged to the underdogs. United rediscovered belief, Villa proved their bite, and Sunderland’s rise has reminded Wolves and the Premier League just how fine the margins can be in the battle for relegation.
