West Indies host New Zealand in the second ODI in Guyana on Monday, looking to extend their series lead after a commanding first-match victory.

Match context

West Indies won the opener by seven wickets with seven balls to spare, bowling New Zealand out for 267 before Carty and Hope’s 131-run third-wicket partnership sealed the chase. Carty scored 95 off 112 balls to earn Player of the Match, while Hope finished 87 not out off 92.

Debutant left-arm wrist-spinner Vitel Lawes, playing his first professional match in any format, took 3-54 and produced a stunning stumping of Chapman to trigger New Zealand’s collapse from 234-4 to 267 all out. Alzarri Joseph finished with 4-41.

How to bet on cricket

New Zealand showed both promise and fragility. Mitchell scored 65, Young and Nicholls added 80 for the first wicket, but the visitors lost their last six wickets for 33 with just one four and one six in the final ten overs. Mitchell has scored 44, 68, 100* and 65 in his last five ODI innings and will be central to any response.

Head-to-head

West Indies have won one and lost four of their last five ODIs against New Zealand, though the first-match performance suggests the gap has closed on home soil.

Betting angle

New Zealand at 1.75 is fair value for a side that has assessed conditions and should bat more freely. New Zealand most fours at 1.65 reflects their need to score earlier. Shamar Joseph at 5.10 for top bowler is the standout individual market. West Indies remain the pick at home given their momentum.

The takeaway

West Indies were the better side in all three departments and carry the form and home advantage into the second match. New Zealand have the batting depth to respond, but until they solve their death-overs frailty, the hosts remain the clear pick.
