England vs New Zealand – Third Test preview

England host New Zealand in the deciding third Test at Trent Bridge from 25 June, the series locked at 1-1 after two contrasting results in London.

Match context

England won the first Test at Lord’s by 115 runs on a treacherous pitch, Robinson taking career-best figures of 7-77 and Atkinson claiming a fourth Lord’s five-for. New Zealand responded at The Oval, winning by 253 runs, their largest victory in England by runs ever recorded.

How to bet on cricket

Matt Henry took 11-109 in the match, the best-ever figures by a New Zealand bowler against England, while Phillips and Nicholls both scored centuries. England collapsed from 182-5 overnight to 209 all out chasing 463.

Stokes returns as captain after being stood down for the second Test following a curfew breach. Both Stokes and Atkinson were cleared of wrongdoing in the incident, though both received written warnings. Stokes made 95 for Durham last weekend and returns for what Brendon McCullum has called a series decider.

England’s batting has been fragile against high-class seam bowling, while New Zealand’s attack of Henry, Jamieson and O’Rourke has exploited the conditions. Stokes adds depth and leadership but does not resolve the fragility exposed at The Oval, where only Root and Brook offered resistance in the second innings.

Betting angle

England at 2.00 reflects home advantage and Stokes’ return, though New Zealand’s bowling has been the series’ standout unit. Draw no bet on New Zealand at 2.15 is worth considering given their bowling depth. England or draw at 1.50 offers a safer line given home conditions over five days.

The takeaway

New Zealand have been the better side for four innings running and arrive with genuine confidence. Stokes lifts England, but until the middle order finds answers to high-quality seam bowling, New Zealand look the value pick in the decider.
