URC Round 15 – Friday betting preview

Three fixtures account for Friday night’s URC action, with playoff pressure, derby edge and late-season desperation shaping the narrative.

Dragons v Bulls (Friday, 20:45 SAST)

Rodney Parade, Newport

The Bulls arrive in Newport with very little margin for error. Eighth on the table with 40 points, they are one ahead of Connacht and firmly in the fight for a playoff place.

Form points to a side that has found consistency. Five wins from six in the URC has steadied their campaign, with victories over Cardiff and Munster reinforcing their ability to close out tight contests. Their only recent setback came in Europe, where they fell 25-21 to Glasgow.

Selection has been disrupted by injuries. Canan Moodie shifts to the wing, Stedman Gans comes into midfield and Devon Williams starts at fullback. The changes reduce continuity but the core of the side remains intact, particularly in the pack where Cameron Hanekom, Elrigh Louw and Marcell Coetzee provide control.

Ackermann has framed the match in simple terms. A win is required. The bonus point is secondary.

The Dragons’ position on the log does not reflect their competitiveness. They sit second from bottom with 21 points, but their Challenge Cup run has changed the tone around the squad. Wins away to Stade Francais and Zebre secured a semi-final place and reinforced their ability to travel and execute.

They have also tested South African opposition this season. The Stormers were pushed in Cape Town and the Lions were forced to work in Johannesburg. Earlier in the campaign, they held the Sharks to a draw.

The head-to-head remains one-sided. The Bulls have won all four meetings between the teams.

This shapes as a contest between urgency and confidence. The Bulls carry the greater incentive. The Dragons carry momentum from Europe.

Pick: Bulls -8.5 @1.40

Ulster v Leinster (Friday, 20:45 SAST)

Affidea Stadium, Belfast

This is the standout fixture on the slate.

Ulster’s season has been uneven. Three wins and three losses across recent rounds reflects a side that has struggled for continuity, but their wins have been convincing, including a 40-19 result against Edinburgh.

Leinster arrive with stronger underlying numbers. Four wins from six and consistent scoring outputs of 30-plus points highlight their attacking efficiency. They have also dominated this fixture, winning five of the last six meetings.

The key variable is venue. Ulster remain a different side at home, with a pack capable of setting tempo and a backline that can convert territory into points. Leinster’s away record has been less convincing than their home form.

The matchup leans on control. If Leinster dictate pace through their phase play, they should create separation. If Ulster can slow the game and win collisions, the contest tightens significantly.

History points one way. Venue introduces doubt.

Pick: Leinster -4.5  @4.20

Edinburgh v Zebre Parma (Friday, 20:45 SAST)

Hive Stadium, Edinburgh

Edinburgh enter the final stretch of the season with little room to manoeuvre. Their recent record reflects a side that has not delivered consistently, with just one win in their last eight URC matches.

There is still internal belief. The final four games have been framed as an opportunity to reset standards and finish strongly.

Zebre’s season has followed a different arc. Early wins suggested progress, but a 12-match losing run has undone that start. Results have slipped, even when performances have remained competitive.

Recent meetings between these sides have been closer than expected. Zebre have beaten Edinburgh twice in the last three encounters, which removes any sense of predictability.

The context favours Edinburgh. Home ground, stronger squad depth and greater urgency all point in one direction. Zebre’s run makes it difficult to support them until results shift.

Pick: Edinburgh -8.5 @1.24
