Bafana Bafana have qualified for their first FIFA World Cup finals since 2010 and their first on merit since 2002, doing so with a squad built almost entirely from PSL talent.
Their path wasn’t smooth. A three-point deduction briefly derailed momentum, yet Hugo Broos’ side still topped their group. In the decisive 3-0 win over Rwanda, five players came from Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, and another from TS Galaxy. Only a handful of Hugo Broos’s squad, Mohau Nkota, Samukelo Kabini, Sphephelo Sithole and Lyle Foster, play outside the PSL.
While Morocco, Senegal and Algeria rely heavily on Europe-based stars, Bafana’s success has come through unity and familiarity. Nigeria, despite fielding an entire abroad-based starting XI, were forced into a playoff route, while South Africa’s PSL core clinched automatic qualification.
Financially and in player market value, Bafana operate on a smaller scale. Their estimated squad value of around €25 million sits near the bottom among qualified nations, dwarfed by Morocco’s €400 million and Senegal’s €250 million. Yet this gap never showed on the pitch.
Burnley striker Lyle Foster is one of the few South Africans playing in a top-five European league, while others like Salah, Hakimi, Osimhen and Mbeumo headline squads worth hundreds of millions.
The PSL, often dismissed as second-tier, has proven its depth. Clubs like Sundowns and Pirates have driven standards high enough to fuel international success, not just for South Africa, but for other nations who regularly draw on PSL players.
This qualification is proof that South African football’s foundation at home can compete with Africa’s richest and most famous.
