England vs India – 2nd T20I preview

England host India in the second T20I at Old Trafford on Saturday, after the opener at Chester-le-Street was washed out following India’s first innings.

Match context

India posted 189-7 in the abandoned first match, with Abhishek Sharma and Shreyas Iyer both hitting half-centuries and Shivam Dube adding a late cameo. Saqib Mahmood was England’s pick with three wickets.

Luke Wood proved expensive and could make way for Jofra Archer in Manchester, while England may also reconsider their three-spinner combination. The series is 0-0, but India’s batting performance gave a clear indication of their intent.

How to bet on cricket

Form and head-to-head

India lead the overall T20I head-to-head 18-12 from 31 completed matches, winning four of the last five including the ICC semi-final in March by seven runs. However, Samson and Kishan have both been below their best in the UK, and Tilak Varma has underperformed since being appointed vice-captain ahead of the Ireland series.

India’s back-to-back defeats to Ireland, by 34 runs and a single run, remain the shadow over this tour.

Key players

Brook captains England and scored 239 T20I runs at a strike rate of 159.33 in recent matches. Jacob Bethell adds balance with bat and left-arm spin. For India, Arshdeep Singh leads the pace attack and will find more movement in Manchester conditions, while Varun Chakravarthy brings the mystery spin variations that have troubled top-order batters throughout India’s recent campaign.

Sharma and Iyer’s first-innings stand showed what the India top order can do when it clicks.

T20 vs ODI vs test betting – format-specific strategy

Betting angle

England at 1.85 is fair value as home favourites on a pitch that rewards new-ball movement and patient batting. Adil Rashid at 5.40 for top bowler is the standout individual market given his record against India’s middle order. Sanju Samson at 5.80 for top batsman offers value if he regains the form that made him the 2026 World Cup Player of the Tournament.

The takeaway

England are motivated to avenge their World Cup semi-final defeat and have conditions on their side. India carry the greater talent but also the greater pressure heading into a match that effectively opens the series.
